Essential Safety & Protection Trainings in Europe

May 26 – May 28, 2017 at Shambhala Centre Cologne
June 2 – June 4, 2017 at Shambhala Centre Vienna

taught by Khenchen Vajra Granelli and Sergeant Maya Fliegel

Essential

Doing a regular Kasung shift may be quite simple. Being responsible for Rinpoche’s personal safety is a different story. In order to perform this honour with confidence, splendour and a sense of humor, it is essential to hear first-hand experience of what to do and what not to do.

Safety

Our sense of safety comes from familiarity. Sun Tzu said: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” For the Dorje Kasung who serve Rinpoche personally, safety is a matter of becoming completely familiar with the clan of warriors and their indestructible methods.

Protection

Pacifying, enriching, magnetising and destroying: these four are the activities of non-dual compassion, which is no other than the natural mind of protection. Since the mind commands our actions in the World, we need to relax and reflect and learn to recognise the True Command. This is profound protection.

Training

In these training weekends you learn a combination of essential knowledge about the Dorje Kasung ways of providing enlightened safety and protection for and around Rinpoche, as well as practical skills to ward of possible threats or embarrassment. Practising these physical techniques together is powerful and fun!

Essential Safety and Protection Trainings – AWAKE

EHoK1 in Lviv, Ukraine

April 21 to April 23, 2017 at Shambhala Centre Lviv
Taught by Deborah Coats, Rupön & Jan Jercinovic, Rupön

Dorje Kasung is a Tibetan term meaning indestructible (dorje) command (ka) protector (sung). Indestructible refers to the indestructibility of space – complete openness – that cannot be destroyed or defeated. Ka or Command refers to the teachings of Shambhala Buddhism. These teachings present the truth of things as they are and the possibility of establishing enlightened society.

In this course, we will explore the basic practices of the Dorje Kasung, a service organization within the Shambhala community charged with maintaining a container of wakefulness in which the teaching and practice of meditation can occur. The creation and protection of this type of container occur through cultivating an attitude of fundamental non-aggression and compassionate action that brings oneself and others back onto the path of wakefulness.

The curriculum uses the writings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and others to explore what it means to be a Dorje Kasung; the path of leadership, protection, compassionate speech; and the view of how to be kind on the spot. Special attention is focused on study of the Kasung Handbook and the Eight Slogans of the Dorje Kasung.

This program may be taken by the curious without any commitment to become a Kasung. For members of the Dorje Kasung, it is an excellent study on the ground, path, and fruition of Kasung practice.

Friday night is open talk on introduction to the Dorje Kasung. The weekend will consist of EHOK I, offering oaths and helping to prepare DK for the KSMR’s visit in the Fall.

Проводять:  Дебора Коутс (Англія) та Джен Джерсіновік (США), учениці Чог’яма Трунгпи Рінпоче та Сакйонґа Міпама Рінпоче.

Dapön Coats lives in London with her family and has been a member of Shambhala and a DK for over 30 years. She held the post of Desung Arm Commander and sat on the CMR for 10 years and now is the DK European liaison to the CMR.
Jan Jercinovic, Rupön has been a member of Shambhala for over 30 years, is currently the Desung Arm Commander and sits on the CMR. She resides in the USA in Vermont.

The Desung Path – Embodying Innate Harmony

April 28 to April 30, 2017 at Shambhala Centre Amsterdam
Directed by Desung Arm Commander Jan Jercinovic Rupön, Desung Care and Conduct officer Irene Vliegenthart Rupön and Tiger Region Desung Commander Sibylle Fraund Kadö

“Desung” means bliss or harmony protector. Desung practice is a profound path arising out of the Shambhala Dorje Kasung tradition. It consists of protecting access to innate wisdom by embodying generosity, gentleness and fearlessness in our daily lives. This state of “being” is made possible by increasing trust and confidence in our basic goodness and that of the society in which we live. All situations are viewed as workable, and distress is recognized as a powerful opportunity to open to our basic goodness.

This program is open to those willing to work with difficult situations and who have experience within the Shambhala leadership. This includes Shambhala Council members, meditation instructors, and health and wellbeing representatives.

Dorje Kasung who have some service experience are especially encouraged to attend.

The program is a prerequisite for Dorje Kasung who wish to apply to become members of the Desung Arm. The training also provides further depth to the profound path of the Dorje Kasung.

Cost of the program is 70€, that includes breakfast and lunch in the Shambhala Centre. Dinners on Saturday will be jointly taken in a nearby restaurant, the price will be affordable.

Please apply with Mrs. Sibylle Fraund at [email protected]  or call Mrs. Irene Vliegenthart at +31 645 210 989 with any questions you may have.

The program starts at 19 hours on Friday April 28 with registration and the talk on view.

Programme description
Inspired by the need to protect the continuous unfolding of the Shambhala-Buddhist Dharma in these increasingly oppressive times, the Dorje Kasung want to do their part for the timely and effective integration of the four pillars of Shambhala. This can only be achieved on the basis of authentic and mindful communication, infused by both maitri and karuna. We understand that we are capable of such communication only when we are fully present in our body, heart and mind. This is why we offer the 2017 Dön Day Programme of the Dorje Kasung in North-eastern Europe as an opportunity for representatives of all the four pillars of our community to contemplate and practice together “Awake! Presence of body, speech and mind in communication.” We will study with and under the guidance of our dear Acharya Sabine Rolf, who was invited by Acharya Susan Chapman to teach the communication approach in her book “The Five Keys to Mindful Communication” throughout Europe. Acharya Rolf brings to the programme not only her expertise in mindful communication, but also her long experience of working together with others as representative of Shambhala Europe. She will lead us in preparatory meditation practice as well as different hands-on exercises that enable us to understand and feel more intensely, how we experience being open, insecure, or shut down in our communications. The weekend allows for protected space to explore our vulnerability in difficult situations and how we can contact the wisdom and information that exists inseparably from these difficulties.

We hope that you feel inspired as we are and join us in Hamburg next February!

Protecting Peace: Working with Conflict – Marburg

The MARBURG Shambhala Centre is pleased to offer a weekend education programme hosted by the Desung Arm of the Dorje Kasung                                                                                                     Facilitated by Sibylle Fraund, Kadö and Irene Vliegenthart, Rupön

June 12-14 2015

Question : What would you do if there were no conflict?

Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche: “It would be deadly. Working with conflict is precisely the idea of walking the spiritual path. The path is a wild, winding mountain road with all kind of curves; there are wild animals, attacks by bandits, all kinds of situations cropping up. As far as the occupation of our mind is concerned, the chaos of the path is the fun.” – Chögyam Trungpa – Dawn of Tantra

…”the fact that our society is experiencing a high level of fear and doubt is a signal for humanity not to give up, but rather to engage further with our enlightened tendencies” – Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche – The Shambhala Principle

The weekend is a precious training opportunity for desung and for kasung with an interest in desung practice. Members of Social Health and Well-Being are warmly invited, as well as anyone who holds a leadership position within the Shambhala mandala, including directors, council members, teachers and meditation instructors and meditation guides.

The Dorje Kasung serves under the leadership of the Makkyi Rabjam, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, inspired by the vision of its founder, the Makkyi Rabjam, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

The commitment of the Dorje Kasung is to benefit others and bring about VICTORY OVER WAR.

The desung work with aspects of the mandala to promote harmony, and well-being.

CONFLICT can arise in any situation or society and the Shambhala teachings developed many skilful means to work with difficult situations in our society.

This training aims to deepen our connection with basic goodness so that kindness and steadiness prevail even in speedy and chaotic situations. It will examine how to realize and integrate that vision into Shambhala councils and communities, and develop confidence in caring for situations of disharmony or obstruction.

Public talk: Friday 12th June 2015 – 7.30 pm to 9. pm

Saturday and Sunday 13th and 14th June – 10am to 6.30 pm

Kasung and desung will wear their nr. 4b town uniform.

The price is 10 Euro for the opening evening or 50 Euro for the weekend.

For information and registration, please contact the Marburg kasung representative:
